Each year in Valencia and various towns around the Valencia Communidad celebrate a festival known as “The Fallas”. The origins of these celebrations were first noted in 1774, and most commonly it is thought to be linked to the start of spring. The burning of the effegies has been associated with the act of the carpenters of Valencia who on the eve of the day of their patron, Saint Jose, burned all the waste wood in their workshops.
Denia is one of the towns which has its own Fallas celebration, they are characterized by Spectacular processions, Mascaletas, Music, Lunches and Dinners. They from the 01 March to 19th March, with the main burning of the effegies taking place on 19th March.
Leading up to the burning of the effigies, the town of Denia will stop for the Masceletas, these are the most incredibly loud fireworks which are set off to huge applause by the crowds, it can take up to 10 minutes for all the Mascaletas to finish, the noise is deafening but somehow, it is an incredibly uplifting experience.
Throughout the streets of the old town of Denia you will be able to see incredible structures built by each of the Fallas, these will all be set fire to as part of the celebrations
This is a rough Guide to the Fallas in Denia
“Plantà”: this is when the Fallas effigies are all constructed in the various districts of Denia
“Mascletà”: Large numbers of fireworks are all set off in sequence at approximately 2:30 pm each day
“Pasacalles”: Each of the Falla will undertake a procession through the streets of Denia accompanied by the music of their Falla
“Floral Offering to the Virgen de los Desamparados” This is the time when you can see all the Falleros in their national costumes, they walk to the Virgin de los Desamparados with bouquets of flowers, which they place on her cloak.
“Cremà”: This is the final act, where the Fallas are burned, they do not burn at the same time, instead they are burned progressively. This permits the public to enjoy all the different Fallas
